Regis & Scorn to perform at the Narcissus Trance Exhibition (26th June 10)

Karl O'Connor AKA Regis and Mick Harris AKA Scorn will collaborate as part of the Narcissus Trance exhibition, which begins at London's E:vent Gallery next week.

The show is based around the ideas that Canadian scholar and philosopher Marshall McLuhan had on the interaction of technology and humanity, and in particular his concept of the Narcissus Trance, which is described by co-curators Paul Purgas and Shama Khanna as "a process that anaesthetises the nervous system in order to allow technological media to merge with the mind." It's not the first time that the O'Connor and Harris have collaborated with Purgas, as they took part in his two We Can Elude Control shows alongside Sleeparchive and Secondo in 2008. Again, a physical product will be released to commemorate the commission; and this time it's 7-inch single bearing text by writer and theorist Mark Fisher AKA K-punk.

Turner prize nominated Mark Titchner, acclaimed New York painter Wade Guyton, author and conceptual artist Tom McCarthy and emerging London based sculptor Ben Washington are amongst the other artists contributing work to the exhibition, which runs from June 26th through to August 8th. The grand opening on Friday 25th June will be anchored around some special live performances, with Rose Kallal doing a new piece with three 16mm projectors and a Roland SH-2000 synthesizer, and O'Connor and Harris showcasing their latest project for the first time in public. The aforementioned artists will also contribute installed pieces to the exhibition that, according to Purgas, "will function as more of an immersive encounter." The exhibition will also host discussion events stemming from McLuhan's theories, and the project will continue into the new year, with a second exhibition at Bristol's Spike Island in January.

Shake It presents Canada Day with Richie Hawtin @ Village Underground (1st July 10)

The few times Richie Hawtin brings his array of technology to London, there's always something not quite right about it. The last few choices of venues SEOne, The Brixton Academy and Ministry Of Sound have raised a few questions. The Contakt show at SEOne was over crowded beyond belief, poorly run and never got going. I saw the same show a month later at I Love Techno and it was immense. Something about London just didn't work. The idea behind it, and off shoot of the Narod Niki shows, was a great concept and ILT proved how good it could work. The ratio of scene-sters to genuine techno fans was far too high, and the main show started far too late, and by that time it was too late to rescue it. Especially as Hawtin was no where to be seen for the first 90mins after the intro.

At last years Friday night Sonar showcase however, Richie was back to his brilliant best. I put all thoughts of Contakt, Cubes, Clothing Lines and any other hype that was surrounding him at the time, to the back of my mind and, as cliche as it sounds 'just concentrated on the music'. Hawtin put in a tremendous performance that night and convinced me that when it is all the techno, there's few better.

I have a feeling this night is going to be just like that memorable night back in Barcelona, in a considerably smaller space, but all about the Techno. No frills, no spills (although maybe a few Canadian flags), the London crowd cruisers will be kept away by the annoyance of Friday work (don't worry i have the day off) and Richie will serve up his finest to mark the occasion.

Early reports suggest it will be held on 4th December this year but in 2010 it looks like the event will be held in Amsterdam rather than the previous years where it's been held in Rotterdam. My 2 visits to the Maassilo venue, in Rotterdam, over the last 2 years have made it one of my favourite venues in the world. Timewarp need to have something special to live up to the old converted power station. But it's not often that Timewarp lets us down so I'm fairly confident whatever they dig out will be more than a little bit special!

T Bar closed

The East London venue is the latest in a ever growing line of closed down London venues. It's been a turbulent few months for the London club scene, with the closure of Matter for the summer, and the news that fabric has gone into administration and is up for sale.

You'd think things couldn't get any worse, but it seems the bad news just keeps on coming with the announced closure of T Bar. Originally in it's Shoreditch High Street location the place was buzzing. Playing host to some of the best djs in the world and always for free. It seemed to lose some of it's specialness when it moved away from central Shoreditch to it's new location, hidden away out the back of London's financial district.

It never seemed to spark to life in it's new location and is now thrown out onto the clubland scrap heap. A message from the T Bar facebook group last night, read as follows

"Dear members/fans and friends,

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that T Bar is now closed. After six and a half years of incredible music, outrageously good times and spectacular memories we are calling time on the T Bar rave.

Thanks to you all for your support, loyalty and for making T Bar the special place it has been for so long. Please feel free to upload photos and memories to this page....

One of my favourite artists of all time. His live set @ fabric's 10th birthday was one of the best live performances i've ever seen. The track listing for this mix looks like it's practically the same set. Unfortunately this time i'll have to listen to without the help of fabric's incredible soundsystem, but it's still very very special. At fabric he finished with 'Marionette' and i was almost in tears. Such a magical moment.

Ricardo Villalobos cancels DEMF Performances

Due to problems obtaining his US work visa, Ricardo Villalobos has been forced to cancel his two performances this weekend in Detroit.

The celebrated DJ and producer was scheduled to headline Beatport's stage at Movement on Sunday, then play back-to-back with Cassy at the Voyage Royale afterparty on Sunday night. According to a press release sent out early this morning,Richie Hawtin will replace Villalobos at Movement, then DJ alongside Magda at Voyage Royale, in addition to headlining the festival's opening night as Plastikman.

The announcement comes just days before what would have been Villalobos' first Motor City appearance since 2002. Movement's executive director Jason Huvaere said: "We are disappointed Ricardo is not able to make it, especially with it being so close to the festival, but the show must continue."

In 2009 a series of five anonymously produced ink stamped vinyl recorded releases appeared in the global techno scene under the mysterious guise "Traversable Wormhole. The series released exclusively on vinyl. The sound of "Traversable Wormhole is a unique signature of sci-fi laden techno music with gaps of time,space & bass in between sound & rhythm.

Within a month's time of it's conception Volume 2 of the series appeared and a huge buzz was soon amassed on the project. Accusations on who was the artist behind the project ran wild. People all over the techno scene had made theories to who was behind it. The project quickly received huge support from many of the world's most renowned techno shops such as Rub A Dub , Hardwax, Juno & Decks.

Word traveled fast through the wormhole and it was soon reported that globally respected dj’s such as Chris Liebing, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Mathew Herbert, Ryan Elliot, Andrew Galluzi, Surgeon, Function, Frankie Bones, Surgeon, DJ Deep & Radioslave were all supporting the sound of TW. With the series fast approaching into further galaxies with the appearance of Vol 3. Techno cult blogsite MNMLSSG (http://mnmlssg.blogspot.com/) tracked down TW via Twitter. A sonar ping was sent back to the popular blog and soon a "Traversable Wormhole" mix appeared anonymously on the site, receiving rave reviews. Their were also reports through the anonymous "Traversable Wormhole" Myspace profile that dj's from the dubstep scene were supporting the songs that had more of a broken beat structure in the series. As the series transgressed to Vol 5 by the year end of 2009 the mystique of anonymity continued to grow.

To usher in the very start of 2010 "Traversable Wormhole" would release the sixth volume of the series. At the same time 20 year veteran techno artist/dj Adam X originally from NYC but now residing in Berlin would be invited to partake in a feature called "Playing Favorites" on "Resident Advisor" the worlds biggest electronic music website. As Adam's feature read towards the end he would subtly take claim as the producer behind "Traversable Wormhole".

While traversing the wormhole, Adam has crossed paths with Chris Liebing and his CLR imprint. Forthcoming in Summer 2010 CLR will release "Traversable Wormhole" Vol 1-5 in digital format for the first time ever with all five volumes being digitally remastered in the highest of quality. Also planned for release at the same time period is a massive remix project that maybe the biggest ever in techno. "Traversable Wormhole" has found itself remixed from some of the best in the scene. Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann, Sleeparchive, Function, Chris Liebing , James Ruskin, Peter Van Hoesen, Terence Fixmer, Kevin Gorman, Tommy 247 & Brian Sanhaji have all taken a turn in remixing TW. The remix project will see release on both vinyl and digital format. Then come September 2010 CLR releases on CD "Adam X presents Traversable Wormhole Vol 1-5" a full length mix of all 10 songs, mixed by the artist himself.

In support of the CLR releases "Traversable Wormhole" will traverse the world with a live show tour starting in July 2010.

Kicking off the night will be Chris Stanford and XI. Both no strangers to the London Techno scene. Part of the legendary Lost Souls parties at Public Life they've played host to a number of the world's very best underground DJs and will be bringing this party to the boil, setting it up nicely for our guests.

Harry Klein is one of the worlds clubs that's on my must go to list. Great booking policy and the fact that they record a whole nights music and then make it available for download is great. Rather than just an hour snipet of the headline set, Harry Klein, like to give you an insight to how the night goes down.

Excellent line up too. PVH's reputation has been growing steadily for quite a while now. He was excellent for us down at Rabid Festival last winter. His label, Time To Express, has been going from strength to strength taking in some of the biggest names in techno, Norman Nodge & Samuli Kemppi to name a few.

Cio D'or is an artist i've discovered recently through the way of a release on the German Prologue label. An excellent producer with previous releases on Treibstoff and the afore mentioned Time To Express. Definitely a name to look out for in the future.

Hometrainer is a Harry Klein resident who's been in the game, both as a producer and a DJ. He's scored releases on labels such as Console and Pitchtuner. His sound is more Cologne styled than the technoness of Berlin, but end of the day he's a Bavarian.

Sandwell District is easily one of my favourite labels of the moment. I've got Regis & Function both coming over from Berlin in July to play at my Slash Dot Dash party. The night after this recording they both played at fabric and we're absolutely outstanding. A mixture of new and old skool techno perfectly blended together with live elements using drums machines and keyboards. Anyone that brings a 909 with them gets a big thumbs up from me!

Matthew Herbert brings his big band to Matter on the 9th June

Electronic pioneer Matthew Herbert (Bodily Functions and Around The House) comes to matter on Wednesday 9th June, when he'll perform with his Big Band.

Appearing with Herbert and his band will be the extraordinary lead vocalist Eska, and also the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble, who'll provide choral backing for the performance.

Eska is currently working on her debut album with Herbert acting as producer and is leader of the Ensemble who performed previously to rave reviews with Herbert's band last year at London's Barbican.

The performance at matter will be only the third time this show has been performed with the choral and visual additions and represents an exciting new exploration of the themes presented on Herbert's album 'There's Me and There's You' - his second with The Matthew Herbert Big Band.

The supporting act for the matter performance will be chosen by Matthew and announced shortly.

Doors open at 7pm and the show is expected to finish at 11pm. Tickets are £18.50 and can be purchased from either Ticketweb or Resident Advisor.

Lost Souls, Public Life and Techno are 3 institutions that go together very very well. As our last party, with James Ruskin, proved in February. We rammed the bog full of techno lovers to witness Ruskin's immense headline set, and Saturday evening we're planning to do it all over again.

This time we're bringing in another UK techno giant, Mark Broom. Over the years he's steadily built up a reputation for solid productions and outstanding dj sets which have seen him release on some of techno's most respected labels and played to some of the best dancefloors across the globe.

Alongside Mr Broom will be a selection of Lost Souls finest residents, providing you with some quality b2b sets. Kicking off the party will be Antony Difrancesco and Lee Hume serving up some deep groovy vibes before Chris Stanford and myself take things up a notch in preparation for Broom to hit the famous Public Life decks!

Ben Klock - Berghain 04 Tracklisting

Ben Klock has been lined up by the powers that be at Berghain to compile and mix the next series in the Berghain compilations.

As with his DJ sets at the legendary Berlin nightspot, this mix includes a wide range of genres from jacking house, dubstep and the more familiar straight up techno we've got very much used to.

The mix features some unreleased work which will be made available through the 2x12" records and the digital release. Tracks by Martyn, Roman Lindau, James Ruskin and Kevin Gorman make up the vinyls. The digital release will also include the track by Jonas Kopp and Ben Klock's own remix of The Ecologist.

A Year of Mixtapes: Week 48 - Detroit Techno

Chrissy Murderbot is a Chicago-based DJ/Producer in love with juke-rave-jungle-disco-dubstep-hi-NRG-gangsta-dancehall-ghetto-garage-core. He's embarked on a project called My Year of Mixtapes which basically does what it says on the tin. Every week he's recorded a mix dedicated to a specific genre throughout dance music history. Week 48 sees him turn his attention to Detroit Techno.

Detroit's local brand of techno has some key differences from the countless other types of techno that have evolved from it in the last 25 years—generally speaking it's more "soulful" (whatever that means); it's more in touch with its roots in house and electro; and it's got a heavy tendency toward Black Nationalist and sci-fi themes (although in a primarily instrumental genre, these themes are often conveyed more through song titles and cover art than actual lyrical content).

It's dark and moody, with plenty of atmospherics. Synth patterns come and go throughout only adding to the tension, complimented with great percussion programming and a series of clicks and dial tone type sounds to increase the depth of the track. Can't wait to hear it on the monstrous sound system in fabric's room 2.

Blur 'Fools Day' - Free Download

Ok so it's not dance music related but i feel still worth a mention. Blur are one of my favourite bands ever. I saw them live in Hyde Park last year and it was a hell of an evening.

The track 'Fools Day' was recorded especially for Record Store day and all 1000 limited edition 7" copies sold out across UK record stores. However Blur's manager, Chris Morrison, thought it was import for the song to be made available to fans legally, to stop fans having to turn to illegal download and file sharing sites. So to combat this, Blur have decided to release it as a free download.

Ibiza Voice catch up with Marcel Dettmann for a chat

“Beat presently imposes itself as the martial law controlling all expression. Music is now only music if legitimized by Beat. And the dancehall represents society under disco lockdown", journalist Biba Kopf wrote those words nearly twenty years ago. His was a comment on his peers - the vast ocean of influences of early minimalist pioneers like Cabaret Voltaire, Non, and Can - being buried by the rising tide of techno music - a descendent clearly rooted in the same common history - but one overtly intent on replacement. At the same time, it was also an essay to the future, to those born after punk, to those in a country that they have seen both united and divided, and to those musicians who have brought Kraftwerk's idea of a man-machine to life - a future where "disco lockdown" didn't look as much like imprisonment as it did freedom.

Marcel Dettmann is one such case, his heritage traceable back to the accumulated grime under his fingernails caused by old industrial records long ago consigned to the dustbin of time. Much has been said of Dettmann and his legendary sets at his residency in Berlin at the techno Mecca Berghain. It seems that he's taken over the role Sasha once occupied, the DJ matinee idol that can even make the boys swoon. Hype aside, the guy came of age in a time when club culture became the center of German youth culture and no other contemporary DJs or producer have expressed that shift better.

His latest release is his debut album for Ostgut Ton, the dark, minimal techno label with which he is synonymous. It's entitled Dettmann and at first the title seems like it could a testament to one man's ego and fascination with his own brand but I Voice cuts through that mystique to capture a pretty normal dude, one who likes his job, loves music, and has the laser focus to be a successful DJ and producer. So many others have the first two qualities but only a rare few have all three, Dettmann is one, and his latest expresses the thoughts and ideas of author Biba Kopf so very well, but re-conceptualized in typical techno fashion so that it is a celebration of a minimal aesthetic that runs counter to the excess that has marked the past decade in music.

There is a sense of restraint on your album, was it hard shifting focus from being a DJ who plays tracks into a producer interested in dynamic, flow, and listener response for a proper album?
To be honest it was a really welcomed change of pace. On the weekends I was a DJ playing all different kind of records and during the week I was concentrating on my personal concept for the album.

How long did this album take to make? There is a sense many of the tracks are unhurried and allowed to fully mature. Did you fool us and just push a button or were many hours spent laboring on it?
The production of the album took approximately one year. Haha I didn't fool you at all. It was my conscious intension to create tracks which give the listener a projection screen and leaves much open to interpretation.

How much of this album is indicative of what you would play in a DJ set at Berghain and did you try out anything on here that wouldn't work at the club?
In principle there is no record which can't be played in a club. You just need the right moment for it. Regarding my DJ sets at Berghain there are definitely musical elements, which you can find in my album tracks but I didn't do it consciously, rather subliminally.

This album has some of the most beautiful melodies in recent techno history, they are so brief and austere, almost old school industrial sounding. Give us a little behind the scenes tour and tell us about the process and some of the influences you used to make some of the more memorable tracks on here.
Happy to hear that - thanks! Whatever I do it has to be real. I'm permanently caught in a crossfire of influences ... That's life. Lots of these different influences are reflected in my tracks.

How does one achieve depth in an age when just about anyone armed with a laptop and software can make a track? There seems to be so much cold, emotionless in the marketplace. Where do you find your inspiration to make music that has meaning and depth?
My inspiration is my personal claim.

In all of your interviews, you seem to genuinely enjoy your job, so many DJs at this level don't seem to, how do you keep things fresh and challenging after all of these years? Is it really all about the music?
Yes it's all about the music. Sharing music with other people is a great feeling. And every weekend it's like a present you get and don't know what's in it.

What kind of tour do you have planned in promotion of the album and what else can we expect from you in the coming months to support it?
To promote my album I'll go on tour to USA, Australia, South America and Europe. Besides that I'll release some new tracks from different artists on my label MDR.

Michael Mayer has been a big favourite of mine ever since his fabric 13 compilation. (We're now on the verge of receiving 52 next month yet 13 is still in my top 3). Immer delves into the darker side of Mayer's musical spectrum. The first mix released nearly 8 years ago is widely regarded as one of the best mix albums ever produced.

This one follows the same rules as the other two, no consideration for what's new and hot. More concerned about the right tracks for the right times, regardless of how old they are. Close Musik 'Departures' from 2002 and Raudive 'Slave' from 2006 are the main candidates.

Ikonika releases free track 'Politriks'

Hyperdub's Ikonika, who was once described by the Guardian as "a rare female face in the male dominated world of dubstep" as decided to send out a track for the love rather than capital gain. And here it is.

One of my favourite DJs, Perc, has just compiled the new Electric Deluxe Podcast. With him being a fellow Lost Souls resident i've been lucky enough to catch the man doing his thing on a fairly regular basis and the guy never disappoints. One of dance music's nice guys too.

His label, Perc Trax, is going from strength to strength with excellent releases which include production and remix work from the likes of Peter Van Hoesen, Gary Beck, Donor & Truss, Kyle Geiger, Milton Bradley and of course the man himself. There's an awful lot of unknown when someone mentions the words Horizontal Ground. Other than a reputation for an immensely high standard of techno.

The label is a sub label of another anonymous imprint, Frozen Border. Finding artists which they admire and putting records out into the world with the most limited information possible.

Resident Advisor did a little investigation work and discovered that 19.454.18.25.5.18 was responsible for the first and third release of the series and decided to acquire their DJ talents to take their podcast into a new century of mixes.

The mix showcases an excellent array of stripped down techno with thundering beats and ear piecing high hats. In the Resident Advisor Interview, 19.454.18.5.25.18 explains how he couldn't do too much within the short mix, so don't be expecting a journey. Instead you'll be rewarded for giving it your time with a collection of great music. Much like the productions on Horizontal Ground the beauty is in the subtle changes through out the mix.

This mix is definitely one to cherish.

Thom Yorke - The Eraser - Live in Cambridge (25th Feb 10)

Stumbled across this last night whilst looking for Radiohead tour dates. Radiohead, for me, are the greatest band of all time and Yorke is easily one of my favourite vocalists. Yorke's solo project 'The Eraser', released in 2006, still gets regular plays 4 years after it hit the stores. This is the title track from the album and an excellent video of him performing an acoustic version. Great video quality too.

Headlining the event is Airdrop Recordings incredibly talented Romanian, Faster. I was lucky enough to catch his set at the recent Cerca Trova party and i was more than impressed with this guys ample skills. The rest of the line up goes as follows

Here's a new mix i recorded yesterday. Something a bit different from my usual house / minimalness but something i've been getting very much into behind closed doors for quite a while. Very much influenced by Berlin. Full of deep dark atmospheric Techno to take your mind somewhere completely left field. I'd recommend listening to this on a good system or with some good headphones. If you've got no bass capacity then you'll not get the full effect of the mix.

Here's a new release from the brilliant Moderat (Modeselektor + Apparat). They've already had the official release of this but now it's time for the unofficial remix pack to hit our eardrums. Remixes of 'Rusty Nails' come from Shackleton and T++ while Headhunter serves up a version of 'A New Error'.

The Shackleton remix is an absolutely epic. Dark yet uplifting, earthy and euphoric. It completely blows the whole release away. The Headhunter and T++ tracks would be headliner status on any release had it not been from the Bristolians monumental efforts.

Hamburg's king of vinyl houses it up in a deliciously deep style on this week's RA podcast.

Despite his inauspicious beginnings as a gardener, Peter Kersten has spent the last decade becoming one of the main players on Hamburg's music scene. In that time he's notched up 12-inches for some of the world's most popular electronic labels—Kompakt, Mule Electronic, Ghostly International, Ladomat 2000, Sender, Spectral Sound and Smallville just to name a few. From wistfully romantic electronica to bumping deep house, Kersten's musical gamut runs far and wide throughout the sphere of electronic music, but his sound is a distinctive and recognisable one. Taking the ingredients of classic Chicago and Detroit productions, softening the edges and applying his trademark melodic sheen, Kersten's finished products often get you grooving whilst tugging those heartstrings.

It isn't just his productions that have elevated him to the status he currently enjoys, though. Kersten is one-third of the team that has helped to launch the careers of Efdemin, Pantha Du Prince and John Roberts via the Dial imprint, which managed to grab RA's label of the year accolade back in 2007 after a run of essential releases. For Kersten, selling vinyl is a serious business, and he's just helped to start Laid, Dial's vinyl-only sub-label, with a 12-inch from US deep house legend Rick Wade. Hamburg residents can even find him behind the counter at the city's Smallville record store, which he co-owns with Smallville Records owner Julius Steinhoff. Vinyl is also Peter's medium of choice when it comes to DJing, and for this week's RA podcast he's taken to his Technics to supply us with a selection of deep and grooving house cuts with a big Detroit influence. We caught up with Kersten by e-mail to ask him about the mix, the Dial residency at Panorama Bar and his Smallville record store.
